Digital Music Group Inc said to the press early this week its move of buying Philadelphia's
Chancellor Records. This also includes over 2,000 tracks under the whole catalog of Chancellor. Chancellor has been responsible for the rise of 1950's and 1960's teen idols including Frankie Avalon and Fabian, and also rock and roll singers Johnny Burnette and Johnny Rivers. The move is coupled with a plan of releasing digitally the Chancellor's catalog including ringtone sales and other ventures. The Group is enticed by the performance of the label's artists that needed exposure from other avenues like digital formats.
In addition to the deal, the Group also announced four music agreements with other record labels to expand its lineup of tracks to 3,500 songs. Among the four are Swan Records, Turtle Island Music, Red Lighting Records, and Passport Audio. Swan is responsible for the likes of Danny and the Juniors, Billie and Lillie, Dickie Do and the Dont's, The Rockin' Rebels, and Link Wray. All of which were great name of the '50s and '60s pop era. Turtle Island is house to aboriginal and Native American Music. Red Lighting is one of Europe's oldest post-war blues labels, with artists like Tommy Tucker, Big Joe Williams, Albert Collins, and Charles Musslewhite. Lastly, Passport Audio is known for blues, jazz, pop, and soundtracks. The Group will distribute the music to digital
music online stores.
